Ranks and Classes
There were 4 ranks or classes in Pompeii:
1. Male Roman Citizen - They had their duties (paying tax and military service) and enjoyed many rights and privileges provided by the ancient Roman government.
The male Roman citizens were further divided into:
a) Senators (patricians chosen by the consuls to serve for life in the senate)
b) Patricians (from noble and wealthy families)
c) Equestrians (richer plebians)
d) Plebians (ordinary working class people)
2. Female Roman Citizen - They had limited form of citizenship
- They were not given the right to vote or serve the government but they could own property, do business as well as apply for divorce

3. Slaves
- They were the lowest class in Ancient Rome
- They did not have any rights and were considered to be properties of their masters
- They were traded, tortured,raped or even killed by their masters
4. Freedmen
- They were former slaves who were freed when they were offered treasure from their masters
- They would be granted citizenship with limited rights
- Their children would be deemed free citizens at birth
- They were the lowest class in Ancient Rome
- They did not have any rights and were considered to be properties of their masters
- They were traded, tortured,raped or even killed by their masters
4. Freedmen
- They were former slaves who were freed when they were offered treasure from their masters
- They would be granted citizenship with limited rights
- Their children would be deemed free citizens at birth
