Getting around the city
Pompeii was an ancient Roman town very close to the modern city of Naples in Campania which is in the southern region of Italy. To visit Pompeii, the closest airports are at Naples (28 km away) and Salerno (49 km away). To get around Naples, you can take a train, a bus, a taxi or drive.

The most suitable train line to take is the Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento line (blue line) which has stops for Pompeii, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius. To visit the ruins of Pompeii, you can take this train line from either Naples or Sorrento which will take about 30 to 40 mins. The cost is 1.8 to 3.2 Euro.

The most convenient stop is "Pompei Scavi" which is only 50m from the main entrance. If you get off at "Pompeii Sanctuario", the walk to the entrance will be longer. You can also take a train to Pompeii from Salerno, which costs 2.1 Euro one-way. The stop to get off is "Pompei" station which is quite a distance from the main entrance but is very close to the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance.

There are also buses from Naples to Pompeii which cost about the same as the train tickets, remember to get off at "ancient Pompeii" instead of "modern Pompeii" which is quite far away.
Disabled travelers or parents with baby prams are advised not to go to the main entrance because there are a lot of stairs there, better off going to the Piazzo Anfiteatro entrance. Whether you are on the trains or on the buses, beware of pickpockets! Another way to travel around Pompeii is by driving, the usual problem of traffic jams, difficulty in finding parking space, crazy drivers like anywhere else in the world may occur.
