Just like citizens in any country, ancient Roman citizens had their responsibilities and enjoyed their rights at the same time.

Their responsibilities included paying taxes and serving in the military forces for men. The ancient Roman citizens had the rights to vote (suffragium), to make contracts (commercium), to contract a legal marriage (conubilum) and to serve in the government. They were also free from the death penalty.
Citizenship was granted by several means. First, by birthright, Romans born with parents who were citizens and freed slaves would be granted citizenship. People from the Latin states (Latini) residing in Rome and those who lived in the conquered lands would also become Roman citizens with limited rights. Finally, freed slaves and those who had given service to the government would also be granted full or partial citizenship. The citizenship could be taken away by the government due to a few reasons such as debt, however, this was not very common.
