Pompeii was an ancient Roman town which was buried after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The city was forgotten until the excavation in 1748. Since the large part of the town was preserved under 4 to 6 metres of ash, it provided us a very precise view of ancient Roman life. The ruins of Pompeii was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and has been a popular tourist attraction for over 2 centuries.
